Lakeland Restaurant Seeking Relocation Funds Via Crowd-Funding Site Kickstarter

Written By Scott Joseph On September 6, 2013

Friend of the flog Greg Cason brought this to our attention. A restaurant in Lakeland is taking an unusual approach to raise funds to relocate. The restaurant is called Bosphorous Turkish Kitchen and it has no connection to the Bosphorous Turkish Cuisine restaurants in Winter Park and Orlando (except that it does, sort of, in that the owner of the Lakeland restaurant, Mustafa Paca, cooked at the Orlando Bosphorous.

Anyway, Paca has set up a project on the Kickstarter crowd-funding site, seeking to raise $8000 by Oct. 5. So far, according to the “Bosphorous Without a Home” page on the site, there are 16 backers who have pledged $10, $25 or $100. Pledges of $1 are accepted, too, and although the names of backers are displayed, the amounts they have pledged are not.

In return for the pledges the restaurant is offering appetizers, entrees or a family platter for four people ($100 level). Backers pledge an amount and give credit card information, but the funds are only collected if the stated goal is met. It’s all or nothing with Kickstarter.

Kickstarter is meant to be a way to fund creative projects. Though the “fund our relocation” is certainly creative, it seems to be on the fringe of Kickstarter’s stated policies.

The project has raised $665 as of Friday afternoon.

What do you think? Would you back a restaurant’s relocation? Leave a comment below.
