Join Us for Supper Club at Chuan Lu Garden

Hot enough for you?

Me neither.

So let’s make it hotter. Our next Supper Club will be at Chuan Lu Garden, the new authentic Sichuan (or Szechuan, if you prefer) restaurant located inside the Ginza Japanese restaurant in the Mills 50 district. For this very special event I’ve partnered with Ricky Ly of Tasty Chomps, one of the area’s leading food blogs. Ricky knows a lot about food in general and Chinese food in particular. He also speaks mandarin, so he will not only be our guide for the evening but also our translator with the chef at Chuan Lu.

If all you know about Chinese food is what you’ve had in the typical Chinese restaurant in America, you’re in for a surprise. The food can be spicy, yes — the Sichuan peppercorn will give your mouth a sensation that other peppers do not — but it’s more than the heat. There are complex flavor notes and textures, wonderful broths and sauces. And not everything is hot; there will be some dishes that you’ll find delightfully mild.

The Scott Joseph/Ricky Ly Supper Club is Thursday, August 15, at 7 p.m. at Chuan Lu Garden, inside Ginza at 1101 E. Colonial Drive, Orlando (west of Mills Avenue).

We’ll be tasting 9 dishes in all, so the $45 (plus tax) charge for the dinner is a steal. The owners of Chuan Lu Garden were happy to offer Supper Clubbers this special price because they’re sure that once you taste the food you’ll come back for more. That price, by the way, includes gratuity and a soft drink. This Supper Club is about the food, so we’ve not partnered with a wine or alcohol sponsor, but if you wish to purchase a drink you may do so on a separate check at the restaurant.

By the way, I’ve had several people ask me about singles at Supper Club event. We’ve always had singles come and enjoy themselves, but this event is particularly suited for singles because we’ll be sitting at large tables with the food served on lazy Susans in the center in the traditional Chinese style. So by all means, come out and join us.
