It seems like one of those things that should go without saying, but there is no underestimating the level of fear and paranoia running rampant through the world.
However, the simple truth is that there is no danger of contracting swine flu from ingesting pork products. According to Dr. Bret Marsh, an Indiana state veterinarian, the flu’s moniker is an unfortunate one because it is actually a combination of viruses from pigs, birds or fowl, and, as is usually the case with the spread of disease, humans. Marsh told Hoosier Ag Today ” properly prepared pork will not harbor a virus of this type, so it is perfectly safe to consume pork products.”
What’s more, there has been no detection of the virus in any herds by any U.S. pork producers. Still, as the article warns, pork producers are bracing for a possible backlash against pork products.
As for me, I think I’ll head out for a nice pulled pork sandwich for lunch.
